Pupils rapt in telling tales
Two primary schools are in the spotlight this week because of the Wakakirri story festival.
Pupils are competing in the festival’s story dance section, in which participants tell a story using drama and dance.
It is the fourth time Waitara Public School has been involved in the competition. This year, 100 children are involved, aged 8 to 11.
“We are telling Dr Seuss’s The Lorax, which has an underlying environmental message which suggests that a single person can make a difference if they are willing to listen and care,” assistant principal Robyn Scott said.
“We all the parents and teachers who work hard as a team to create the sets, props and costumes.”
Wideview Public School, at Berowra Heights, came second in NSW in last year’s Wakakirri event.
In 2008 team made up of students from Years 3 to 6 and their story title is virus.com, about a computer virus that is destroyed by a team of doctors.
The production involves colourful costumes and creative dance.
The schools performed at the Hill Centre on Monday. Finalists will go on to the Sydney Entertainment Centre in September.
In other Wakakirri news, two Waitara Public School Year 6 pupils – Imogen Learmonth and Stella Ye – came first and second, respectively, in the story-writing category.
