Giant Jackson a NSW hoop star

Standing at 196cm tall basketballer Jackson Fennell has the kind of presence on the court that coaches dream about.

With his height, skill and accuracy Jackson, 16, was an obvious selection in the NSW basketball side scheduled to compete at the Special Olympics Australia national championships in April.

“I have been playing basketball for about five years,” Jackson, of Mt Colah, told the Advocate.

“I’ve learned lots of different skills from playing.”

The St Edmunds student plays with Special Olympics as well as in mainstream competition with the Cavaliers at The Brickpit, Thornleigh.

Jackson won a silver medal when he represented NSW at the last national championships held in Queensland.

He is also a previous winner of the Special Olympics upper north shore Basketballer of the Year award.

Jackson is also a member of the NSW Ivor Burge basketball team.

Ivor Burge is a national basketball competition for athletes with an intellectual disability.

Jackson said he was looking forward to travelling to Adelaide for the championships.

“I am very excited to be going – it will be fun,” he said.

The Advocate has thrown its support behind our touring team of Special Olympics representatives.

The eight young athletes heading to Adelaide in April need our help to meet their costs.
